This apparatus measures the residual strength of soil by replicating phenomenon on the ground generated by landslides and slope failures.
A ring-shaped specimen can be attached on a shear ring that is apart upside and downside, and can be fixed in the upper part with the normal stress load put on. And then the specimen is sheared, rotatable in the lower part, and then the shear strength and deformation properties of the soil are measured.
As it is capable of creating greater deformation than the maximum shear strength, it is especially appropriate when measuring the residual strength of overconsolidated clay that is an important factor to consider a long-term major deformation of the ground (such as a landslide).
Its structure with an integrated rotation axis and rotating plate doesn't allow rotation error. The gap on the binding ring is small and leakage of specimens and frictions between edges during shear operation can be removed.
